A modern valances version of traditional valances are panel valance.  Design is embroidered, fabric painted or appliqued. Decorative edges in the form of tassels, lace or other fabric trim can also be added. The pins are attached to the top of each panel in sets of four or six, depending on the size of the panel. When hung, the edges of the plates overlap slightly to cover the top of the window.

For an update an old-fashioned valances to modern valances, create a display box above the window. Trek Assen should fit the width of the entire window, including the size of the framing. The height of the box depends on the space available, and what you want to view. The box is stained or painted to match the other three in the room, or painted to match the walls or curtains. Stencil small images, shapes or designs on the box to match prints used in the decor. Cutting edges of the box with carved wood trim, or spice it up with beads, tassels or lace.
